Stop Nuclear Waste in Japan- through the Surfrider foundation!!

You know that I am a big fan of the Surfrider foundation- it's not just about the waves- it's also about the environment, the beaches, and the community.... so, when I read about the building of a nuclear "reprocessing" plant in Japan- I thought we should write about it...

Oppose Nuclear Waste on Japan's Coast

The Rokkasho Nuclear Waste Reprocessing Plant, located along the coast in Rokkasho Village, Aomori Prefecture, Japan, is about to become fully operational in February 2008. A single day's radiation discharge is estimated to be the equivalent of what is produced at a typical nuclear power plant during an entire year.  The publicly announced  plan for the discharge is to release it into the atmosphere and into the ocean about three kilometers offshore, threatening the safety of the food supply, people’s lives and the lives of future generations.

To this end, Surfrider Foundation has started a petition drive against the operation of Rokkasho Nuclear Waste Reprocessing Plant and against the possible discharge of radiation into the atmosphere and the ocean. We would be grateful for your support.

Send this petition to:

  • Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda

Dear Prime Minister Fukuda,

The Rokkasho Nuclear Fuel Reprocessing Plant must not be allowed to become fully operational. It is understood that when the plant is at full operational capacity, the estimated radiation discharge, in one day, will be the equivalent what is produced at a typical nuclear power plant during a year.

Worse yet, one of Rokkasho Reprocessing Plant's discharge locations is located only 3 kilometers offshore at about 44 meters depth. This radiation discharge will merge with the ocean currents and spread throughout the Pacific Ocean, polluting on the global scale, making this more than just a problem for Japan.

The discharged radiation can spread into the atmosphere and ocean, threatening the safety of our food supply, our lives and the lives of future generations. Japan Nuclear Fuel Limited asserts its safety, claiming that the waste will be diluted in large quantities of seawater. However, even minute amounts of diluted radioactivity have the potential to damage people's health. This is not just a problem for those connected to the sea for their livelihood and recreation, such as fishermen and surfers. It is a problem for all life on this planet. Rokkasho already has a history of radioactive chemical leaks. Considering this, we demand the following: Do not allow Rokkasho Nuclear Reprocessing Plant to dump radioactive material into the ocean or air.
