The new Market Hall in Rotterdam: More evidence of that ubiquitous Dutch design and style!

One of the great things about Rotterdam is the style and the design that permeates the city.  After 98% of the city center was detroyed during WWII (Hitler decided that Rotterdam was the perfect port for his twisted European Utopia and bombed the whole city to "start fresh"), the process of rebuilding began.
The Dutch have long been recognized for their creativity in design and style, and Rotterdam is an excellent example of this!  When the rebuilding process began, architects went crazy!  I mean, seriously- there are some amazing, upside down, Escher style buildings that will rock your world.
This new Market Hall is awesome!  Basically, there's a new rule that says that all markets must be covered- so the designers at MVRDV tool this a step further- and they are creating a massive mixed-use structure!
There are 250 apartments, 100 restaurants, and underground grocery store and an open market in the middle.  Factor in giant LCD projections on the walls and you have one seriously bizarro and cool structure.  Time Warner Center NYC, eat your heart out!

The apartments also incorporate the Dutch regulations about NATURAL LIGHT in apartments!  Can you believe it?  You actually are required to have a certain amount of natural light in your home to maintain a healthy life.  I heart that requirement.

Now, I just need to figure out how to check out the apartments ..... definitely one of my first projects when I arrive!
